Here are some examples of the lessons we teach with the BUGS we use in our most popular classroom program, the Joy of BUGS! The grade levels under each lesson will show the benchmark alignment in each case. This list is not even close to exhaustive - our programs follow this sort of lesson delivery, but they can travel quite a distance from any sort of "script" we may have going in. Our instructors remain acutely aware of the responsibility we have to help students we meet in the days of No Child Left Behind.

Example 1)

Animal Subject: Praying Mantis Lesson focus: Eyes and front legs

Basic lesson: The Praying Mantis is a predator. It eats live animals. In order to eat live animals, it has to catch and kill them first. To do this, it has large compound eyes that face forward from its body to see its prey, and big, strong front legs to grab its prey and hold it while it eats it. This coupled with its ability to sit very still, very patiently and blend in well with its surroundings, make this an extremely effective predator.

Example 2)

Animal Subject: Emperor Scorpion Lesson focus: Form and Function

Basic lesson: The Emperor Scorpion is a predator, too. It eats live animals. In order to eat live animals, it has to catch and kill them first. The scorpion has two sets of weapons to help it catch and kill its food and to protect itself: claws and a stinger on its tail with associated poison gland. ......... to be continued....
